Ground: | Mardyke, Cork |
Scorecard: | Ireland v Scotland |
Event: | Scotland in Ireland 1947 |
Day 1:
At the end of the first day's play in the three days' match with Scotland at Cork, Ireland were in a favourable position, being no more than 88 runs behind with eight wickets in hand. Rain delayed the start until after lunch, and just as happened last season at Greenock. Boucher, the Irish spin bowler, was in his element when the pitch began to dry, taking six wickets for 69 runs.
The Scottish batting was disappointing, especially after Aitchison and Crerar gave the team the encouragement of a bright start in which they put on 78 runs before Boucher got rid of the Glasgow Academical. Aitchison batted finely to reproduce the form that got him half centuries against India and Ireland last summer, remaining for over two hours. His 56 included one 6, right out of the ground, as well as three 4s.
Boucher dismissed Crerar and Findlay with successive balls, and bowled Aitchison at 93. At the tea interval, Scotland's score was 115 for four, but Boucher and Ingram made such good use of the wicket afterwards that the last six Scottish wickets fell for 25 runs, in 35 minutes.
With an hour left for play, Pollock and Waldron put on 30 runs before the former played on to Nichol. His partner followed with the addition of 10 runs, being clean bowled by the Scottish captain, Laidlaw, who made the ball turn disconcertingly to keep the scoring down, but at the conclusion of play for the day, Ingram, the Middlesex player, and Shearer, the Irish captain, were still together.
Day 2:
A morning thunderstorm caused a long delay in the Ireland and Scotland match at Cork yesterday. Rain ceased at two o'clock British time and it was hoped to start at six, with a possibility of play continuing until nine. With eight wickets in hand Ireland needed 89 to gain first innings lead After two and a half hours of heavy rain, inspections were made and it was decided that play was impossible. The match will start an hour earlier to-day, and finish half an hour later.
Day 3:
Scotland drew with Ireland yesterday in the cricket match at Cork. Youngson, the Scottish fast bowler, was practically unplayable, taking six wickets for 19 runs in twelve overs.
The Irish side, continuing their first innings, lost the eight remaining wickets for the addition of 51, making their total 103.
The Scottish team went in to bat with a lead of 37, and played until tea time, when they declared at 181 for nine. This set Ireland with the task of scoring 219 to win.
Ireland lost their first three wickets cheaply, and there never seemed any possibility of them getting the runs. It became a question of whether the Scottish bowlers could get down the wickets in the time available, but hard as Hodge and Nichol tried, they just failed, Ireland at the close having two wickets to fall.
