Ground: | Old Trafford, Manchester |
Scorecard: | Lancashire v Scotland |
Event: | Scotland in England 1925 |
Day 1:
Against a team representative of nine Scottish clubs, Lancashire, on an easy wicket, made their highest score of the season yesterday at Old Trafford, but their batting was not calculated to arouse enthusiasm of the thousand spectators. It was nearly always sedate.
It is to the credit of the Scots that their bowling was steady, and the fielding exceptionally good.
A feature of the Lancashire batting was the stand between Hallows and Major Green, who put on 106 for the fourth wicket in a hundred minutes. The last named completed 50 in ninety minutes. He gave no chances.
Sharp's partnership with Hallows fielded 45 runs. The sixth out at 256, Hallows, who scored 54 out of 85 before luncheon, was missed at slip when 87. During his stay of four hours and a quarter, he hit a 6, a 5 (all run), and ten 4's. The innings lasted five hours and five minutes.
Scotland had ten minutes' batting. Kerr was caught before a run had been scored, and Mackay left at 5.
Day 2:
Although the representatives of Scottish cricket were doomed to defeat as the result of the first day's play at Old Trafford, they made quite a respectable show in the second innings.
In the first only two batsmen got into double figures, the last five wickets falling for 5 runs. R. Tyldesley had a remarkable analysis, his four wickets costing as many runs.
Half an hour before luncheon the visitors, against the bowling of Watson and Hopwood, scored 26 without loss. Mackay, who had hit a 6, was soon out afterwards.
Then came a succession of profitable stands, in which the Scots appeared in a new light. Groves, who took part in three of them, assisted in adding 59 for the second wicket in fifty five minutes, 35 for the third in twenty minutes, and 45 for the fourth in half an hour.
Batting an hour and fifty minutes, Groves only gave one chance, at 29.
At 5.10 Lancashire won by an innings and 74 runs.
